Choosing the right weed membrane
Weed membranes, also known as weed control membranes or garden membranes, are a popular and effective solution for preventing weeds from thriving in your garden. Weeds are an all-too-common problem that will impact the quality of your soil as they compete for nutrients. They can also become overgrown, blocking out sunlight and preventing your plants from thriving.
A popular way to eliminate weeds is with the use of a weed membrane. This product is placed over the soil and helps to block out sunlight to prevent weeds from growing. The permeable layer will still allow water to pass through, so established plants will still get the hydration they need.
The weed membrane can then be covered with a layer of mulch to make it look more attractive and to help keep the ground adequately hydrated. The weed membrane does not need to be pierced to prevent water pooling, as the water should pass through easily. If you do notice pooling, there may be an underlying problem with drainage in that area.
When used correctly, weed membranes can help plants thrive by eliminating the presence of weeds. Weeds can crowd plants, blocking out sunlight and competing for water and nutrients. To help keep weeds at bay, we recommend using high-quality weed membranes.
Some weeds, like Japanese knotweed, are particularly resilient and put down deep roots that can extend into foundations and cause considerable damage. Weed membrane alone might not be enough to eliminate Japanese knotweed, as it will have extensive root structures and can remain dormant.
Can you lay weed membrane over weeds?
It is essential to remove all weeds and vegetation before laying the weed membrane over your surface. This will make it easier for you to lay the weed control membrane and prevent any damage.
How long will the weed control membrane last?
Our weed control membrane is heavy-duty and will last more than 25 years if installed correctly. However, if it is left uncovered, UV rays will start to break down the fabric. Make sure to install the fabric onto the ground, ensuring the edges are well overlapped by 100mm, and cover with your choice of ground cover.
